Career Opportunities in Advertising

There are a variety of career options for those who study advertising. Advertising, promotions, and marketing managers are the most common upper-level advertising positions. According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, those within advertising careers must plan programs to generate interest in a product or service.

The following are some of the most common career opportunities in advertising.

Account Management:

An account manager is responsible for developing a thorough knowledge of a client’s business, the consumer of the client’s product, the marketplace, and all aspects of advertising. Advertising duties include:

  • Creative marketing
  • Media
  • Research
  • Commercial production

Creative Department:

All advertising agencies have a creative department. This department is responsible for the ideas, images, and words that make up adverts and commercials. The most common positions within creative departments are copywriters and art directors.

Copywriters edit and proofread ad copy, write materials and sales promotion, and develop merchandising. They also write scripts for television or radio commericals.

Art directors prepare paste-ups, rough letterings, and layouts for print ads and television storyboards. They develop visual concepts and designs, and oversee photo and film sessions for adverts and commercials.

Media Department:

Media departments within advertising agencies are responsible for creating cost effective advertising, and for placing it where it reaches the right audience at the right time. Advertising locations may include:

  • Internet
  • Television
  • Videotext
  • Billboards
  • Magazine adverts
  • Newspaper
  • Radio

Those who work in media departments must gather studies and information about people’s viewing and reading habits. Other duties include:

  • Understanding the efficiency of different media vehicles
  • Becoming thoroughly familiar with media data banks and information sources

Interactive Marketing:

A recent and fast growing development in the advertising business is interactive marketing. Interactive marketing is typically web-based, such as a company’s website. A consumer will seek out a website and cater that experience to their needs. Interactive marketing involves making that website user friendly, but also aiming to keep a user there for as long as possible.

Advertising careers in interactive marketing include design, marketing, and computer programming. All organizations and agencies need computer designers, programmers, and strategists who understand how to use interactive media creatively and effectively.
